The YMCA/FCSCfs Wheelchair Access Map (WAM)
Volunteer Activity - Freedom of Mobility for All
People in wheelchairs wish to do the same activities as everyone else: eat at restaurants, meet friends for drinks, go shopping, etc. Right now in Japan because of poor access, facilities, and resources, many people in wheelchairs cannot. Sadly people restricted to wheelchairs are also often restricted to their mansions, apartments, and houses. Everyone is entitled to Freedom of Mobility regardless of their physical condition.

What is WAM?
WAM is a team-based volunteer activity that collects information that facilitates mobility for those in wheelchairs in Japan. Essentially checking wheelchair accessibility.
How did WAM start?
In the course of meeting many Challenged Children across Japan, some of whom are in wheelchairs, the YMCA/FCSC was made aware of a serious social problem: poor wheelchair access and little resources for those in wheelchairs.
What does WAM currently check?
The name of the establishment Is there an automatic door and if so, is it at least 72cm wide If there are stairs/step outside the entrance, is there a proper wheelchair ramp Are there any other kind of access (eg; open door) Sidewalk ramps (optional)
* As WAM grows, so will the factors to be checked: Eventually, we hope to also check for: interior space & access, washrooms, doorways, elevators, etc.
What kind of establishments does WAM check? Stores Restaurants Bars Office & government buildings Businesses
* Currently, WAM only checks ground level-1F commercial establishments. As we currently only check outside factors and do not enter the establishment, it is a public activity.
